| 内容記述 | With an increasing emphasis on extended discourse in English language teaching classrooms in Japanese educational contexts, this study first examines attitudes of Japanese university students toward reading. Results were consistent with the current national trend reflecting an overall decline in average time spent reading. This means that English language teachers face a considerable challenge to encourage reading and develop basic reading skills in English, when the majority of students do not even enjoy reading in their first language Japanese, and often spend minimal time engaged in reading. The second half of the paper reports on efforts to design and implement an extensive reading course to facilitate the enjoyment of reading, as well as to increase reading quantity and reading speed. Results showed that through extensive reading, students were able to increase their reading quantity and reading speed, which, in turn, lead to improved reading proficiency scores. | |||||||
