| 内容記述 | This essay explores the construction of "metaphysical poetry" in English literary history, focusing on Edward Herbert's role within the tradition. While the label originated in Samuel Johnson's critical dismissal and was later famously redefined by T.S. Eliot, the inclusion of poets like Herbert in metaphysical poetry anthologies has shaped contemporary literary evaluations. I examine how anthologies, particularly those by Herbert Grierson, Helen Gardner, and Colin Burrow, have influenced the reception of Herbert's poetry, selectively emphasizing his secular works and aligning him with John Donne's intellectual lyricism. By tracing editorial choices and the ideological frameworks behind these anthologies, this essay highlights what I term the "politics of anthologies," which has both preserved and constrained Herbert's poetic legacy. Ultimately, it argues that Herbert's poetic achievements and the very tradition of metaphysical poetry have been constructed through the editorial practices from the late nineteenth century to the present. | |||||||
