| 内容記述 | This paper overviews the history of "Meshimori-Onna" in the Edo era Kaminoyama domain, which roughly covers present-day Kaminoyama city, Yamagata prefecture. "Meshimori Onna" literally means "mealserving woman", the maidservant hired by Hatago inn along Kaido route who often engaged in prostitution in Edo era. This interim report is based on the preliminary research for the women's life history interview project in Kaminoyama city. Kaminoyama has been developed since the mid-15th century, when the Onsen hot spring was found. It became even larger to be well-equipped coaching inn town in Edo era where many travelers stayed in and enjoyed the hot spring. Generally speaking, Hatago inn along the major Kaido route has gradually hired "Meshimori-Onna" who serves to and entertains the travelers since late 17th century. Such Hatago inn succeeded in getting permission from the authority in each domain to hire them officially while Edo Shogunate basically prohibited prostitution except one designated area in the Edo city. In 1737 official permission to hire the "Meshimori-Onna" was granted to Hatago inn in Kaminoyama. Kaminoyama then became a well-known "pleasure" town in which travelers could enjoy the hot spring bath, drink and women. In 1801 Kaminoyama authority banned hiring them but quickly re-permitted again in 1804 after receiving a powerful petition from Hatago inn owners. The domain's annual budget was certainly helped by the tax venue in the 'Meshimori-Onna' system. Historical documents contain the name of several Meshimori women and indicate their financial strength in the late Edo era. |
